Going where there’s NoDepression.com
First of all, we’d like to welcome you to NoDepression.com, and to thank you for visiting. We’ve been talking about this “web launch” for so long now that it’s a little hard to imagine it’s finally here. Now that it is, we’re glad you’re here too.
You may, or may not, be aware of our previous incarnation as a print magazine. No Depression began publishing in 1995 and ceased bimonthly operations this past summer, although we’re set to unveil our new twice-annual “bookazine” publication in October via the University of Texas Press.
Much as the bookazine aims to bring No Depression’s long-established editorial perspective and aesthetic into a new publishing forum, so is NoDepression.com seeking to do the same on the web. You’ll notice, first off, that many of our longtime senior editors and contributing editors are on board as columnists. Both of the magazine’s co-founders (Grant Alden and yours truly) are among those columnists, along with senior editors David Cantwell, Barry Mazor and Don McLeese, and contributing editors Paul Cantin, Kurt B. Reighley, Lloyd Sachs and Allison Stewart. Each of us will contribute a new column once every two weeks, with a new column appearing on the site every weekday. We extend our sincere thanks to these writers for being willing to take a leap of faith with us into this new venture.
In addition, we’ll have plenty of reviews. Our record reviews section will feature a new review every day, highlighted by the “ND Record of the Week” every Tuesday. Our live reviews section will feature a new review every Monday, with occasional additions on other days. We’re also interested in hearing from you thus our “submit a review” area, where you can send us a review of a show or record or book; if it’s approved by our editors, we’ll publish it in our reader reviews section.
And, of course, there’ll be lots of news, with daily updates as we hear about things that we think you’ll want to know about. To that end, we’d like to welcome a new face to the fold, news editor Kim Ruehl. And speaking of new faces, we also owe a debt of gratitude to Vickie Gilmer, who shepherded us through the difficult technological transition to the web world. Pulling all the levers behind the curtain is our longtime No Depression publisher Kyla Fairchild, who played by far the most integral role in galvanizing the effort to get this website off the ground.
There’s one other batch of people we also need to acknowledge, though: It’s not an exaggeration to say that none of this would have been possible without the generous contributions of more than 200 of our longtime supporters, who answered the call when we posted notice about our Founders Circle drive. You can see all their names here, and if you see them around, please thank them for us. Or, if you are one of them please know that you would not be reading this web page if not for the contribution you made to help get it off the ground.
So take a look around and come back soon, and often! We’ll certainly be doing the same.
