Dressed sharp, as always, Malo and McFadden, guitarist Eddie Perez, and drummer Paul Deakin, along with horn players Max Abrams (sax) and Julio Diaz (trumpet), upright bassist Ed Friedland, and multi-instrumentalist Michael Guerra, kept a good portion of the crowd dancing in the aisles all night long. The set was a good mix of predominately upbeat numbers like “Back In Your Arms Again”, “Dance in the Moonlight” and “Fall Apart”, the crunchy blues of “Do You Want Me To”, interspersed with some slow dances like “Harvest Moon” and “Blue Bayou”. By the time the band closed out the night with “All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down” even the last seated holdouts finally got up on their feet.
The Mavericks are currently on tour promoting and celebrating the start of their own Mondo Mundo Recordings label, the first release of which is All Night Live Vol.1 which is a collection of live recordings from their 2015 Mono Mundo tour. Plans include more live releases and a new studio record slated for an April release. I had a minute to speak to Raul before the show to ask about the plans for the label. He said the ‘loose plan’ is to release more live records likely around themes like rarely played album cuts or covers. They’ll be recording shows for future releases while on tour, so if you hit a show, you might get to hear a deep cut or two, or even something like Pink Floyd’s “Us and Them” which started the long encore in Durham. Here’s to many more years of Mondo Mundo and uplifting Mavericks concerts!
