A Night To Remember With Holly Williams
Holly Williams/Chris Coleman with Lydia Ramsey at The Triple Door, Seattle-May 7th/13
It’s been awhile since i was in Seattle, but when i saw Holly Williams was playing there in May i knew i had to go. In my humble opinion she has produced the best album so far this year and i was anxious to see her at this peak in her career.
First the venue,The Triple Door, is a place of wonder.A mixture of fine cuisine, old style setting, and the most welcoming staff and servers.
Seattle favorite,Lydia Ramsey opened the show in fine form. She is poised to release her first music later this year. Her voice is strong, her songwriting solid, and she possesses a fine guitar technique.Liked her set a lot and look forward to her first release.
Holly hit the stage next to a very welcoming crowd.Accompanying her on this night was her husband,Chris Coleman, a multi-instrumentalist,singer,and songwriter. They proceeded to enrapture the audience with a selection of songs from both Holly’s previous albums,John Prine’s Angel From Montgomery, and every song from her new release- The Highway. They even tackled Til It Runs Dry by request with their two voices covering very well this three part harmony song.
What i loved about Holly’s delivery was the weaving of the emotional plus the intensity in the presentation of her lyrics. Her songs cry out for a connection to your soul. She achieved this over and over again with each song.Chris Coleman was with her every step of the way offering soaring harmonies and tasteful accompaniment. I also enjoyed the playful banter between them on stage.
To me to make a show a success a few things have to happen. The audience must be drawn into your world from the stage. The artist’s music needs to translate to the people and move them. Throughout the show there should be a flow that fully engages the crowd. Holly and Chris managed to make this happen. Their energy and commitment to the songs made for an evening of total joy for the lucky ones to see the show.
Holly Williams is now on my list of artists to see every time they tour. Holly and Chris will be touring throughout the year on her own and with various other musicians including John Hiatt and John Prine. Mark the dates to see her in your town. You won’t be disappointed.
