DVD/CD Review – Lucky Peterson Band featuring Tamera Peterson LIVE at the 55 Arts Club Berlin
Blues fans are now able to transform their living rooms into a hot Berlin blues club simply by popping the DVD of the Lucky Peterson Band, Live at the 55 Arts Club into their home player. This amazing triple DVD double CD package was produced by Andreas Hommelsheim, the owner of the 55 Arts Club in March of 2012, who films every show and provides it as video on demand at 55artsclub.com. What makes this show unique is despite his over forty year career and over 300 album appearances Lucky Peterson had yet to be recorded live until now. Having been discovered by Willie Dixon who helped him release his first record “Our future: five year Old Lucky Peterson,” is a master of the Hammond B3 and marvel on the guitar, with a classic soul baritone as big as all outdoors. Peterson has formed a show band with his wife the powerhouse vocalist Tamera Peterson who together are the new Ike and Tina Turner. They front the spot on trio of Shawn Kellerman on guitar, Tim Waites on Bass and drummer Raul Valdes, who deftly navigate styles from blues to soul, funk gospel and both classic and modern R&B.
It is hard to pick out highlights as each of the twenty two numbers from the seasoned group of pros could be classified as a “show stopper,” from your average club band. Viewers will no doubt be hitting replay on a few numbers such as the dramatic retelling of Ray LaMontagne’s “Trouble,” and the delta blues reworking of Prince classic “Kiss.” Lucky and Tamera Peterson are natural born entertainers who make the most of every opportunity to reach out to the audience and ramp up the excitement with fun loving call and response repartee’ and dramatic musical shifts in tempo , style and dynamics that turn on a wink or a nod. Lucky himself heads right out to the tables for several tunes, singing and playing from the seats with the crowd. All of this is caught in high def sound with a multi camera shoot that brings you up close and personal with each performer. This package should be issued as a master class on how to be a successful modern blues and R&B club performer. Peterson gives as spot on definition of what this group achieves in the extras interview from disc three when he says “We take the old, put it with the new, and bring it up to date.”
