Waylon Wouldn’t Approve
A couple songs added to a set list paying homage to an artist or writer who has influenced you is a beautiful, sensible act. Cutting a cover of a favorite song by a composer or vocalist whom you admire and respect? Perfect!!
BUT… Playing “hero-worship” through copying a sound, style, or image while tagging yourself a unique maverick? I hate to be the one to tell you, but you’ve missed the entire point.
What the likes of Waylon Jennings did was move AWAY from the very thing you claim as an imitation to his musical and personal path. If you’re touting his choices as the path you admire while simultaneously faking you’re way through what you think he would have done? You’re doing the exact opposite of what he did.
Can’t you see?? (See what I did there?)
Waylon left Nashville to do his own thing because he refused to pattern himself after what existed and what the music executives expected him to do which was be a COPY. Please consider this as you copy HIM.
Bottom line? There is nothing artsy or intelligent about trying to be like someone else. Step up your game, make art for yourself, not to become a *star* …or just get out. The music world has plenty of fakes circling the drain as it is.
Stop clogging up the pipes.
