Kelley Anderson’s New Band: Grand Strand
The so-called “Grand Strand” is 60 miles of South Carolina coastline stretching from Little River to Pawleys Island; more recently, however, it’s also the name of former Those Darlins member Kelley Anderson‘s new band.
We knew this was bound to happen; sure enough, this past February, Anderson (“Kelley Darlin”) left the band she co-founded with Jesse Darlin and Nikki Darlin to work on Grand Strand and other projects: Anderson founded the organization YEAH! (Youth Empowerment through Arts and Humanities, Inc.) in 2006 with Anna Fitzgerald and Courtney Sharpe, and currently serves as the organization’s Chair of the Board of Directors. YEAH! also operates the Southern Girls Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp in Murfreesboro, TN.
Riot House Records will release Grand Strand’s debut single “Cactus Blooms” later this month. Catch the band on tour with Richard Lloyd (of Television) this summer — until then, listen to the single, which opens with a classic “wall of sound” rhythm and Anderson’s husky vocals. A distortion-heavy, wailing guitar bridge is pure Jesus and Mary Chain in a new take on the old kiss-off number. “I’m giving up whiskey for Tequila Sunrise/A heart that was broken is finally awoken, now I have a life.” It appears her heart now belongs to Texas (or at least a Texan) instead of Nashville.
