Bob Dylan, “Stuck Inside of Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again” Take 13

A rippling, looping version with shuffling lyrics that are almost the ones you know. The emphasis and phrasing of Dylan’s voice is, though, remarkably different than that on the album version — the album being, of course, Blonde On Blonde (1966). And the refrain isn’t yet a question: “Oh, Mama, this could be the end / I’m stuck inside of Mobile with the Memphis blues again.” The ending, though, turns plaintive as it fades: “Oh, mama, I just need a friend / Stuck inside of Mobile, with the Memphis blues again….”
