Voo Davis – Midnight Mist (Deluxe Edition), Butter & Bacon Records
There is an overlying ‘heavy’ vibe about the way he approaches his music, not overtly ominous, however a kind of ‘mist’ that envelops the overall feel of the music. This talented Chicago based musician has recorded for our ears a spicy stew that has an underlying blues feel and then all kinds of spices and flavors just to keep us on our toes. There is a distinctly swampy, dirty and murky feel to this that resembles a really good thick dripping with mystery gumbo that swirls around the imagination and entices the appetite. Your can’t settle down with this because you never know which bite contains a pepper, sweet or hot, or a rich piece of red snapper, or some of the fuzz tone that adds a delicious spice to this.
This man plays a plethora of instruments, he not only plays them but plays them well and in a variety of genres that blend all the styles and tastes and whatever else is in his rich blend of music which has the afore mentioned blues, but also swamp-rock, zydeco, psychedelic sounds and extracts an essence from it all to form a pool of emotional waters. He is helped on this disc by Craig Borchers – drums, Michael Burkart – Hammond B-3, Reggie Winterland – bass, Calvin Conway – harmonica and fiddle, with Carolyn Broussard and Dorian Rush – background vocals. In his music there is a distinct mix of Johnny Jenkins/Jimi Hendrix/Junior Wells with a touch of the U.K.s BabaJack.
The Deluxe Edition contains a video that is quite a visual treat, it shows how this artist views his music; generally i’m not a video fan but this one is quite nice.
