A Tasty Soundtrack
As far back as music goes there always seems to be a need to categorize it in to neat and tidy genres or sub genres or mixed genres. Whether it be country, rock, soul, American or rap good music is just good music. The Michigan band the Teaheads is one of those bands that are hard to file under one genre. Their debut record If You’re June, I’m November is a jaunty romp through a musical landscape that is layered with sounds from all over the musical spectrum. Country, Americana, Indie Rock, Punk and more litter this album making for some pretty good music.
The Teaheads invite listeners into their musical world with the rocking “Welcome to a Jack London Novel”. As raw fuzz filled guitar riffs parade through listener’s ears a hint of twang can be heard peeking through the chunky music. You get a true taste of country on “You Shoulda Asked Me” a honkey tonk infused number and “Princess Diana” a banjo and pedal steel heavy ode to Princess Diana. “Show Me What It’s Like” is a fast power pop song with frantic guitars and rapid rhythms. One of the best songs from If You’re June, I’m November is the meandering “The Church”. A folksy feel is amped up with the addition of keyboards that give the song a hint of gospel.
These days a lot of new music is starting to sound alike so it is refreshing to hear young bands like the Teaheads making music. They think outside the box and deliver fresh tunes without worrying about following a set pattern. They show that it is ok to mix banjo or the twang of a pedal steel with fuzzy guitars and big booming rhythms. On If you’re June, I’m November these guys make good music that doesn’t need a category.
