Angie and the Deserters-“Forgetting to Forget”
Angie and The Deserters are a driven and charismatic band with a passion for beautiful melodies and energetic hooks. Their recent EP “You,” which was released on October 7th 2016 and features a groundbreaking single titled “Forgetting to Forget.”
The song tastefully blurs the lines between various genres, including pop, country and rock. The song immediately kicks in with some warm and tuneful acoustic guitar strumming, surrounded by haunting, lush synth-like atmospheres that add a lot of depth and texture to the song. The bass and drum work is impeccable, making for a precise, solid and balanced rhythm section. The chorus comes alive with great overdriven guitar sounds that add some energy and truly lift up the entire song. The electric guitar also plays a role in the second verse with some beautiful lines drenched in reverb and other effects. The piano and the beautiful swelling synths also add some more musicality and movement to the whole arrangement.
Last but not least, Angie’s voice is the true star under the spotlight. Her truly unique vocal performances reminds me of stars such as Ani DiFranco or Stevie Nicks. Her personal lyrics and understated elegant delivery add a lot of character to the song and a truly timeless feel.
The rest of the EP also features great melodies and tasteful arrangements particularly on tracks such as “Goodbyes,” a charming, mellow and emotionally powerful ballad that is built on top of a stunning guitar progression and some amazing strings to add color. Another track that’s definitely worth mentioning is “When The Nighttime Comes,” which has a heavy and sensual groove that is inspired by blues and rock. The rhythm is almost hypnotic. I love how the electric guitars and vocals seemingly interact with each other. At the same time, you can still feel some solid Americana influences with folk instruments building up nicely in the background. Definitely one of the most clever arrangements on the EP. The title track is another really great tune with some cool ¾ tempo, going for a waltz-like rhythm. Overall, Angie and the Deserters put together a stunning musical arrangement in their latest ‘You’ EP.
