Brian Hutson’s “Anything Can Happen” marks his return to the musical arena for the first time since his late 2017 debut EP Midnight Sessions and continues upward flight into notoriety with immense style and skill. He’s come a long way since his 2015 debut and the continuing evolution of his presentation reflects the growing confidence Hutson and his collaborative team have in his songs. Hutson’s talents as an interpreter will likely become his calling card in the future and the evidence is ample here – he’s one of those singers who doesn’t have to pen the tunes himself to get over because he brings so much of his identity to bear. His Wall Street career undoubtedly paid Hutson’s bills and likely continues to do so, but Hutson’s true calling lies in musical arts and the coming years will undoubtedly see his star continuing to rise.

It has a practically perfect length at less than three minutes. Each element of the song is honed to a razor edge with no discernible dross cropping up along the way. It begins as a rather plaintive, bare bones offering focused around Hutson’s sensitively wrought vocals and some lyrical and intimate acoustic guitar. The production invests both the voice and stringed instrument with inviting warmth while carefully modulating their balance in the mix. There’s no question early on that Hutson’s vocal is the reason why we’re here but the instrumentation here and later in the track consistently enhances his vocal excellence. It gradually evolves into expertly crafted and grand pop with a lightly orchestrated quality that helps further ingratiate it with its target audience. The luxurious ballad-aspects of the performance are wonderfully delivered – listen to how the drumming patiently develops the song’s forward motion and benefits from the same careful production balance distinguishing the rest of the song.

The lyrics go far beyond your typical pop staples and conjure a romantic feel without ever relying too heavily on cliché. It’s equally admirable how the words strike on a conversational quality while still maintaining a high level of craftsmanship and obvious intelligence. Hutson’s vocals are enormously attentive to dramatizing these words and he shows the keen instincts of a longtime performer in doing so rather than exaggerating the content and making it come off as insincere. He’s obviously, as well, a singer intent on tailoring his voice to the instrumentation rather than trying to dominate the musical backing and it results in an even more seamless listening experience. “Anything Can Happen” is an important entry in Hutson’s growing discography and is a song you can revisit anytime, not just around Valentine’s Day. This important turn in Hutson’s story will rank among his peak moments for some time to come thanks to the standard of excellence he continues to match or exceed each time out.
