Caleb Warren and the Perfect Gentlemen, Making New of Old with Style and Grace
Unabashedly calling on virtually every musical influence across the south, Caleb Warren and the Perfect Gentlemen have rightfully settled into their own redaction of old timey soul. With their first release since last year’s EP, The River, the band is firing on all cylinders even adding one in the form of upright bass for all that chunky low end. What’s left is an insanely danceable number, “Hoke Poole Stomp” that instantly flashes visuals of seersucker and boater hats with a muted trumpet that invokes nothing but swing. There’s a keen validity to Caleb Warren and the Perfect Gentlemen, not a mainstream two chord hodgepodge like that awful band from across the pond (aren’t they an indie outfit now??) but railcar tight rhythm provided by the Perfect Gentlemen as a vehicle for Warrens’ baritone sweetness and fiddler, Jenna Mobley’s harmonizing backups.
Backed with a glowing rendition of the great Jimmie Rodger’s, “Peach Pickin’ Time In Georgia”, the track highlights Warren’s croon and trumpeter Robert Green’s prowess of his horn. Dave Aitken throws down crafty guitar solos on both tracks, with Colt Bowen and Ian Blanton keeping expert time on drums and bass, respectively. The self-described “brass and brew-grass” sextet is hardly a novelty act in a realm that’s polluted with them. So grab your gal and cut it up, for you non-shakers (like me) at least hold her hand and tap a toe…you’d be hard pressed to not. Truly a fun effort by a group of high quality musicians each veined in the spirit of making new of the old, but in the freshest way possible. I’ll be bated with breath for a full length from Caleb Warren and the Perfect Gentlemen. Grab a copy of the single on July 7th and you will be too. We’re beyond ecstatic to premiere the bands take on Jimmie Rodgers’ “Peach Pickin’ Time In Georgia”. Y’all enjoy now… +words: sz+
