Fiddler Casey Driessen already has an impressive resume, having served in the bands of Tim OBrien and Steve Earle and participating in the lamentably short run of genre-busting electric string band Wisechild. On his solo debut, he works with a palette thats both wide and deep, essaying, among others, a bold multi-tracked version of Bill Monroes Jerusalem Ridge, a nifty medley of Sugarfoot Rag and Eddie Harriss Freedom Jazz Dance, a trio of original compositions, and a song he wrote with Bela Fleck and Bryan Sutton (with whom he toured in 2005). Backed by bassist Viktor Krauss, percussionist Jamey Haddad and a thoughtfully chosen set of guests (OBrien, Fleck, Jerry Douglas and Darrell Scott among them), Driessen approaches each selection with energy, wit, sonic inventiveness and an especially keen rhythmic sense, resulting in a unique exploration of his instruments possibilities.
