Charlie Sexton & Shannon McNally – Southside Sessions
There wasnt really a plan here just a few days of hanging out at Charlie Sextons home studio shortly after he and Shannon McNally had toured together which explains the hodgepodge of the material on this seven-song EP: two Sexton/Tonio K. co-writes, one McNally original, two choice covers, two remakes of songs from Sextons recent album. What it lacks in focus, Southside Sessions makes up for in simple musical charm. Burn and Id Do The Same For You are spare and spontaneous compared to the meticulously arranged versions on Sextons Cruel And Gentle Things; both approach work, just in different ways. McNallys Old Cypress Tree is the best of the three newer tracks that open the disc. The real treasures are the perfectly chosen covers: Townes Van Zandts No Place To Fall, rendered in tender harmony reminiscent of Kelly Willis and Jay Farrars take on Townes Rexs Blues; and Jesse Winchesters beautiful Biloxi, swept away on McNallys soulful saltwater-sweet swoon.
