Corb Lund’s New Album Is Right Where Music Needs To Be Right Now
The Detroit Soul, Motown Sound seems to be ‘the thing,’ to do when making music these days. When done incorrectly, it sounds fake, forced and well a more polished version of “bro-country.” But when done correctly, like on Cord Lund’s new release, Things That Can’t Be Undone, it sounds brilliant.
This new album is like nothing you’ve ever heard from the Hurtin Albertan. Produced by the ever stealthy, Dave Cobb, Things is a true piece of musical art. “Weight of the Gun,” incorporates the aforementioned “Motown Sound.” The greasy shuffle of the guitar and Lund’s intimate vocals makes this song a keeper after a couple spins.
“Sadr City,” is a story Lund had the framework for, but figured it needed a focal. He interviewed two soldiers who served in Iraq, personally and got their story. Very poignant, very real and a vision of what life truly has become.
“S Lazy H,” though might be one of the best songs written since “Even If It Breaks Your Heart.” This isn’t bluster, it’s the truth. A song about a family ranch that is infected by meddling lawyers and in laws. Never has a story been told like that, well in musical form that is.
Album wraps up with “Sunbeam.” A song you think is a love song, but in reality is about Lund’s late niece. Very Corb Lund, very very amazing.
Things That Can’t Be Undone, is the most solid and sonically amazing album put out by Corb Lund.
