We are not going to discover Cory M. Coons at this stage of his career; the Canadian has been recognized and won a lot of accolades in recent years, cementing his place as one of Country rock’s hottest properties. His 2018 new album, The Long Road Home, gives us what we all expect from Coons, but also providing a wide variety of influences, such as Folk or classic Rock, to name a couple.
Could this be a new musical direction for Coons in the foreseeable future? I don’t know, but this album is composed of eight pretty solid tracks, finding a pretty healthy balance between styles, melodies and rhythm.
One point worth taking into consideration is that this album has been produced by the world-renowned Ron Nevison, who has worked in the past with the likes of Styx, Night Ranger, Bad Company, Heart, among others–this has provided “The Long Road Home” with some stellar production, thus making it sound perfectly in every single aspect. Whether it’s on soulful and heartfelt tracks like “Long Road (Dead Man’s Dream)”, where Coons also allows himself some room to showcase his skills as a guitar player, or in the exotic charms of “Chameleon Inside” (a track that may as well be a metaphor of Coons’ own growth as a musician), the production sounds stellar and a musician of Coons’ stature deserves no less.
One of the things that I love about this album and Coons overall as a musician, is the fact that he can provide a lot of really organic music; this album is composed of eight solid tracks that reek of classic Rock ‘n’ Roll–no auto tune, no massive editing, no nothing. Just good quality music and this is something that has made him in one of Canada’s finest exports in the Country rock genre.
If I had to point out something about this album it would the following: you don’t normally hear the word “epic” thrown around in Country rock albums, but then you hear the song “Love Will Fire the Flame” and you understand why Coons is the proverbial fish out of the water that this genre really needed. A touching mix of acoustic and electric guitars, this is, at least to me, the finest piece of the whole thing and it’s a real testament of this man’s talents.
I think this is my favorite Country rock album from 2018 and Coons’ finest so far: it’s compact, it’s well-written, has a stellar production and it has a very organic feel that makes everything much more powerful.
This is one to remember.
