Part Dixieland, part country pop, “Chocolate Covered Glasses” is the sweetest of summer confections. Written by George Wells and sung with youthful exuberance and wide-eyed innocence by Emma Klein, the single is a jubilant reminder of how charming and fun American music used to be. Eschewing the corporate slickness of contemporary Nashville, the song is an old-school stomp, utilizing a soaring horn section consisting of trumpeter Ken Watters, trombonist Billy Bargetzi, and saxophonist Brad Guin. The three elevate the track to a full-on honky-tonk party as Daniel Mason’s banjo delivers its rusty, rootsy undertow.
“I get a better view of all of the wonders/God made for me,” Klein sings with infectious optimism. People often reflect too much on the gloom and doom around the world so it’s refreshing to hear words that kick negativity to the wind. At times, Klein recalls Dolly Parton in her early days, which bodes well for her future. She’s one to keep an eye out for.
