Everly Brothers – On The Wings Of A Nightingale: The Mercury Studio Recordings
After a live reunion in 1983, the Everly Brothers recorded three studio albums that showed they could transcend nostalgia. On EB 84, producer Dave Edmunds crafted a rock/country sound that suited the Everlys’ talents, from the Rockpile-flavored “I’m Taking My Time” to the melodic pop of “On The Wings Of A Nightingale”, penned by Paul McCartney. Edmunds returned as producer for Born Yesterday in 1986. The Don Everly-written title track, a ballad of a disintegrating marriage, was a Top 20 country single and the highlight of the album. Their version of “You Send Me”, taken at a slower pace than Sam Cooke’s, gave the brothers ample opportunity to harmonize. Overly slick production hampered Some Hearts, the weakest of the albums. The reissue shows the Everlys willing to experiment and not content to be an oldies act. It might also be the only album with songs by both Rank And File (“Amanda Ruth”) and Andrew Lloyd Webber (“A Kiss Is A Terrible Thing To Waste”).
