Freedy Johnston – Live At McCabes Guitar Shop
April 1998 found Freedy Johnston in Los Angeles recording tracks for his album Blue Days Black Nights. As a respite from the studio, Johnston played a gig at Santa Monicas famed McCabes Guitar Shop. The beautifully rough and engaging performance was recorded but not released until now. The intimate setting provided a perfect venue to try out his then-new songs for an audience. Backed by only his acoustic guitar, Johnston gave stark readings to The Farthest Lights and Pretend Its Summer, making it clear the disc would be darker and more somber than his previous efforts. Later in the evening, guitarist Mark Spencer joined him for a set of older songs including the emotional narrative Western Sky and a gorgeously barren cover of Jimmy Webbs classic Wichita Lineman.
