“I Choose the Whiskey” is the Right Choice

It is incredibly risky, in today’s music market, to present a song simply, with minimal production and few “bells and whistles.” Of those who have attempted to do so, only Chris Stapleton has, truly, succeeded. That success is based on a deep lyrical adeptness and a gritty presentation which translates to the masses. On his latest single, that’s exactly what rising star, Donald Benjamin, does.
With his vocal performance, Benjamin reveals the bitterness of heartache and, at the same time, the triumph of self-affirmation. The song is raw, and emotional, while maintaining a catchy, memorable hook.
Musically, the “traditional country sound” is alive and well. The track is smooth and features a biting slide-guitar lead, which does not overpower – a rare feat in today’s guitar-driven music industry.
While he has had recent, mild success on Country radio, this latest single is poised to be a breakout track, for the Michigan native.
“I Choose the Whiskey” is Benjamin’s strongest single, to date, and easily one of the best releases that I’ve heard, so far, in 2017.
