Infectious Sing-Alongs and Riveting Harmonies
When listening to Great Peacock’s new LP, Making Ghosts one thing is for certain: you will sing along with the band. The album quickly draws listeners in with sweeping choruses and riveting harmonies. Co-founders Andrew Nelson and Blount Floyd use vocal harmony and catchy lyrics to illuminate their love of Tennessee and reflect on the people that pass through our lives. “There’s a line out of that song [Making Ghosts] that references the idea that as human beings we tend to make people ghosts that are in our lives,” Nelson said in an interview, “People come and go and situations change over time, and someone that was so much a part of our life one day is almost like a ghost another day. And it’s neither negative or positive. It’s just sort of an observation.”
Nelson and Blount broke off from a bluesy – rock band to develop their own style of music based on vocal harmony and acoustic guitar. One can hear the influence of bands like Crosby, Stills, and Nash, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, the Eagles, and Buffalo Springfield in their music, but they have successfully carved out their own take on the genre. Songs like “Tennessee,” “Take Me to the Mountain,” Broken Hearted Fool” “Making Ghosts,” among others, provide listeners with swaying, rhythmic melodies with just the right touch of vocal emotion. “Go Back,” with its pedal steel and acoustic guitar, reflect on the band’s love for Tennessee: “Don’t you wanna go back, back to where the fields are growing, don’t you wanna go back to the place you always been.”
Making Ghosts is the band’s first full length album, and contains songs from their 2013 EP (Take Me to The Mountain, Desert Lark), the 2013 single “Tennessee”, and some new songs including the title track. All in all, this is a terrific album that should gather momentum on the music charts. Great Peacock is a talented, unique band, with a member who always wears a poncho – who can compete with that?
