Jay Farrar – ThirdShiftGrottoSlack
This five-song disc spotlights a new “Memphis Mix” of the song “Damn Shame” from Jay Farrar’s recent Sebastopol release, supplementing it with four outtakes from the album’s original recording sessions. The remix was a worthy endeavor, dangling a rhythmic hook that makes a strong song more alluring than it was to begin with.
The real find here, though, is “Station To Station”, which is better than all but a couple of the tracks on Sebastopol. Its melodicism recalls classic mid-’80s R.E.M., which is eerily appropriate given that its chorus — “It’s not the end of the world/You can’t even see it from here” — could serve as an answer-lyric to R.E.M.’s best-known song from that period.
The other three songs (“Greenwich Time”, “Kind Of Madness” and “Dues”) have their modest charms but ultimately prove deserving of the leftover status they rated when the album was released.
