If you’ve been keeping up with the American indie underground in the last few years, then you probably are already aware of the sterling reputation that Jerad Finck’s music has in the scene. A go-to companion of some of the biggest touring acts in all of North America, Finck has arguably become one of the most buzzed about artists in western pop over the last half decade. In his new single “New Kids (SEAWAVES remix),” audiences are privy to his most solid and accomplished work to date, and anyone who questioned his musical genius is effectively shut down in its wake.
Written in support of the Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and its campaign to rid communities of gun violence, “New Kids (SEAWAVES remix)” is a worthy track for the cause it celebrates. Using his trademark knack for weaving intricate rhythms together under the timber of his own vocals, Jerad Finck launches a stunning harpoon into the chest of hatred and demands for a massive change of perspective in the songs incredibly memorable chorus. No matter what side of the aisle your allegiances lie on, there’s no denying how the passion in Finck’s performance in this song for anything.

Great songs have the ability of making us relate to the frame of mind that their composer(s) were in during the artistic moment of conception, and “New Kids” is a fine showcase of what pop musicians can be capable of when given all the right resources to craft their material with nothing to hold them back. We can feel the rigidity of his anger, the pain of his reflection over where we’ve come from and how difficult it will be to get to where we need to go. Finck shatters every glass wall separating us from him, and in a little over three minutes he captures our hearts for a lifetime.
SEAWAVES did a pretty awesome job with this remix, and I’d go as far as to say that unlike the original, this rendition of “New Kids” has amazing crossover appeal to fans of mainstream pop, rock and even hip-hop (thanks to a swaggering beat that takes serious cues from the trance underground). There’s nothing here to tie the song to the adult contemporary format for life, but there isn’t the same shapelessness that has led most of crossover singles post-2010 to be viewed as fragmented and cheap. I wouldn’t say that he’s changing the sonic narrative with this song, but he’s definitely chipping away at the design.
Songs like “New Kids” are the exact reason why critics from one side of the Atlantic to the other have fallen head over heels for Jared Finck since his epic debut nine years ago, and there isn’t any evidence to indicate that his work is going to get anything but better moving forward. Like all of pop’s most significant icons, Finck has never been afraid of change or adapting to the landscape of the culture he’s living in, much like the message of this single. I think we can count on him – and his music – being a part of many conversations for a long time to come.
