Reissues and repackagings of Johnny Cash’s recordings have multiplied like the biblical miracle of the loaves and fishes since his death in 2003. His inspirational material gets the anthology treatment on this collection of 24 songs recorded between 1957 and 1981, including three previously unreleased tracks. Gospel was an integral part of Cash’s musical DNA, and he took his art in unexpected directions with the straight recitation of “Here Was A Man” and a collaboration with Billy Graham on “The Preacher Said Jesus Said”. Cash was equally at ease singing traditional hymns (“Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” and “Amazing Grace”) and more current material, such as Dorothy Love Coates’ “That’s Enough” and Thomas Dorsey’s “Peace In The Valley”. Cash also showed his skills as a gospel songwriter with the Old Testament-based “Belshazzar” and “He Turned The Water Into Wine”, and spotlighted the work of contemporaries with Carl Perkins’ “Daddy Sang Bass”.
