Jordana Talsky’s latest album is eclectic, quirky charmer
Singer/songwriter Jordana Talsky is a musical chameleon. On her latest album, Neither of Either, Talsky shifts from one stylistic skin to another. That she is so easily able to accomplish it reveals the wide range of her influences as well as her strengths as an artist. Talsky refuses to be defined by a single sound; her genre-hopping gives the record a sonic freshness that keeps it an engaging, moving experience after repeated spins.
On “Bitter Sweet Heart,” Talsky’s voice is intimate, as if she’s whispering in your ear. The music, on the other hand, unfolds with an electronic pulse that gives it an icy, modern edge, making it cool to the intellect. The stylish mix of the traditional and contemporary in “Bitter Sweet Heart” broadens Talsky’s appeal; she can attract young and old with timeless music like this.
Talsky is equally successful in fully embracing the indie side of her sensibilities. “Run” is playful, upbeat alternative music, well-suited for college radio. However, her finest moment just might be “Don’t Know.” Beginning as slow-burning vocal jazz, this soulful track kicks up the tempo and Talsky’s infectious, seductive “whoa-oh” is about as addictive as hooks get.
