A piano is gently punctuated by a shimmering wave of synthesized melody that washes over everything in our audial scope. We’re awakening – it’s a new day. The sun is brightly shining on us, the beauty of nature is emphasized in the light of the breaking dawn, and all of our senses come to life simultaneously. Jose Holguin starts to sing in his beautiful Spanish voice, his vocals weaving between the notes from the piano like colorful strands of fabric becoming a part of a grand tapestry. The synth fades away. It’s just Jose and the piano now, and of course, the audience that’s left to absorb the understated might being dispatched before them. This is Jose Holguin’s new collaboration with Luis Carlos Toro – “Eres Mi Fuerza.”

Jose’s words point us where we want to go, and he beckons us to get out of bed and discover all that this new day has to offer us. With every striking key we’re gifted another reason to join him in partaking in this individualized moment of catharsis. We wander with him through an unfolding musical landscape that sees us crossing paths with Luis, who is more than willing to join our journey. The pair are singing about God and their love for him, but they’re also singing about how amazing a day it is, how perfect the balance of nature and humanity will be in its realization, and most importantly how grateful we should all feel to have the opportunity to enjoy it together.

The synthesizer that greeted us at the beginning of the song makes a couple more appearances during the break between the chorus and the second stanza, as if to menacingly remind us of the storm clouds that once occupied these now blue skies we’re standing beneath. There’s no dampening the spirits here though; Jose and Luis simply will not allow for that. “Eres Mi Fuerza” isn’t about looking backwards, but instead about deciding what the future will look like based on the spirit of today. We’re hypnotized by the exquisite instrumentation of the song, relieved by the familiar tone of the lyrics and ultimately brought to a climax from the bold merging of the two. I don’t normally go for Gospel songs, but this track is a breed of its composers’ own devising.

When “Eres Mi Fuerza” concludes and the audience is left with the void of silence that commences, it’s hard not to get excited about what tomorrow’s morning light could bring us. Jose Holguin and Luis Carlos Toro are the preeminent lyricists in Latin music, but not enough has been said about their vivid melodies, which on their own have the power to shape what the listener is thinking and feeling without ever adding words. From top to bottom this single will impress any music aficionado with an ear for calculated craftsmanship, and it speaks volumes about the sterling grasp of human emotions that these two artists are clearly so proficient at understanding.
