In Lauren Turk’s new single “See You Again,” listeners are treated to an intimate performance from the up and coming singer/songwriter, who doesn’t need any bells or whistles to create a mood with her gorgeous voice. For artists like Lauren Turk, songcraft is a much more personal thing than just a means of making a career. A song like “See You Again” isn’t conceived from a place of greed or through some marketing strategy; it’s born of the heart and soul of its composer, cultivated through years of personal exploration and released in a cathartic explosion of color that transpires before our very ears in this recording. Turk isn’t content to be a role player in this industry – she has a story to tell, a song to sing, and a lot to teach us about her life, her love and even a little about ourselves.

In her own words, “See You Again” is about “letting go with love. Letting go makes room to let in, and doing so with love not only sets us free, but attracts it back to us and keeps that space clean, so whatever you’re letting in doesn’t inherit baggage”, she writes. Her words are a blueprint for owning your power, and reveal a deep belief in leading with love, no matter what. But make no mistake, Turk’s message and music video was born of her trials and tribulations to survive true sorrow. In her own words “I had been going it alone, cocooning to repair, but I was stuck. One day I woke up with the vision to hold a Funeral for a Version of Myself in my home to create a container for letting go. Allowing myself to be seen by my friends allowed for me to be supported, and the space I cleared when I let go was filled with their love. And now I get it. Why vulnerability is so important. How much we need each other. How vital community is”.

The video for “See You Again” literally walks us through the dream-like visions of Turk’s wake; we watch as the room fills, ghosts and all, to lay to rest the past and embrace the new and now. The symbolism isn’t difficult to read in the least, but Turk’s enigmatic prose makes the song less literal than what a lot of her peers might have produced. Here she presents us with a glimpse at life through the jarring and unforgiving lens of death and reflection. The coffin used in the video now sits in Turk’s studio as a testament to her own self-awareness and dark wit, and unsurprisingly it’s become quite an object of interest for visiting collaborators.

If this is on par with what we can expect out of Lauren Turk in the future, pop fans can plan on hearing a lot more magic in the years to come. “See You Again” is by no means the culmination of Turk’s talent, which is still raw and unfiltered even in this well-produced single that she wrote and recorded in just hours. With time I believe she’ll grow into the full-fledged star that she has the capability of becoming. “See You Again” is an evocative juggernaut that reminds us of what it’s like to experience true, relentless vulnerability in its rawest form, and although its subject matter is heavier than some, its vocalist is undisputedly a breath of fresh air in the stagnant pop climate of 2018. I’m curious to see where her bold sound takes her next.
