Lily & Madeleine Create a Sisterly Shimmer
On this, their third album as a duo, sisters Lily & Madeleine Jurkiewicz create an ethereal sound that’s enhanced by the lure of their beguiling sibling harmonies. They instil every song here with ample amounts of atmospheric intrigue, not the sort of thing that generally ensures an immediate connection but one which resonates thereafter. Those in search of catchy choruses and indelible hooks will find little of those here, but what they’ll encounter instead is a lush atmospheric glow. A mesh of aural imagery and sonic sketches, these ten tracks ebb and flow, keeping the mood mellow but rarely intrusive enough to impart a wholly cohesive impression. Nevertheless, the slow flow of “Midwest Kid” and “Not Gonna” create a distinct style, one that might win over the listener based on their overall glow alone. “Small Talk” is the closest the two get to quirky, a jaunty little number — at least as compared to their usual dreamy designs. More like mood music than any emphatic exposition, Keep It Together does do just that, although it can be a little willowy around the edges. There are elements of interest — even intrigue — but the flighty approach doesn’t always congeal like a normal song would. Hypnotic and surreal, Keep It Together still allows for a blissful bouquet.
