Lord & Lady – The Lift

Chemistry is impossible to create out of nothing. It’s instinctive between two entities, and when it comes to human beings, it’s all the bigger of a mystery. Finding that certain someone in our lives, whether it be a lover or a friend, or someone we can create things with or work together towards something, can be next to impossible when we’re actively looking for it. When we’re all on our own and feeling lonesome in this world, it can seem like we’re always going to be that way when times are at their toughest. But when we find that missing piece, that person who stirs and motivates us to be the best version of ourselves that we can be, it’s like we’ve made a one hundred and eighty degree turn around that we always knew we had in us. I don’t know if it was the gods that control creative vibes that brought songwriters Scott Oatley and Rachel Panchal together in the first place, but whatever miraculous force is behind it, we the audience are the ones getting to reap the rewards in their new shared project Lord & Lady. Together, Oatley and Panchal are making big waves on the west coast indie scene and garnering plenty of buzz abroad as well with their new song “The Lift,” a sample offering from their soon to be released EP No Ghost, out in 2018.

Much like two stewards of the land cultivating a garden of diverse, tasty gifts from nature, Lord & Lady have taken their time developing their song craft and persona that they present to us in “The Lift,” and you can tell that it’s definitely been worth the wait. There are still traces of raw inelegance in their production of this new song, but all in all it has the look and feel of a sincerely mature composition from a pair of seasoned artists. Much in the way that The White Stripes pushed the envelope, Lord & Lady are a band that loves creating an innocent and humble narrative that isn’t gender centric, and in fact goes out of its way to defy any of our expectations we might have as listeners. It’s thought provoking music for a generation that loves to pick apart its music more than it does its movies, and indeed, the duo has given us a lot to sift through in this three minute slice of sonic pie.

As we watch Lord & Lady continue to grow and expand on their assortment of richly accented harmonies and forward thinking arrangements, I hope that they manage to maintain the organic credibility that is stoking the fire of their artistic connection. For as many times as I’ve seen the chemistry between two artists lead to powerful output, I’ve also seen it tear apart the very fabric of their individual identities. Something tells me that the mesh between Oatley and Panchal is a special one, and if the needle continues to be pushed in their direction, they will certainly have the opportunity to show us just how durable their creative relationship can be.
