There’s been a resurgence in harmony-based folk, but that doesn’t mean fads are synonymous with shlocky quality. Newcomers Club was founded by John Roach and Geoff Lynn. Raised outside of Boston on old folk music and Dad’s radio, they moved to New York to start a band. They performed as a duo for a year and a half, writing songs and working on harmonies. They’ve since been joined by Mike Gannon on lead guitar and vocals, Sam Bowers on vocals, Ronnie Lanzilotta on bass, and Mike Vecchione on drums – all powerful storytellers that help define Newcomers Club sound. They’re a powerhouse six piece with a focus on compelling vocal arrangements, who will bring you to tears with heartache harmonies and get you moving with rocking refrains. Newcomers Club draws from the old greats – Fleetwood Mac, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, and Paul Simon to name a few – and blends their influences into a unique, contemporary sound. They are working on their debut album, set to be released in November 2018.
For a preview of what they have to offer, “David” gently unfolds into an expansive story. Bowers’ lyrics paint the life of an ordinary-seeming person into an epic adventure, celebrating David’s humble qualities. The band’s chemistry creates a welcoming glow, and the final lap through the chorus will make your heart skip a beat in exactly the right way.
John Roach (guitar) says about “David”, “This song is close to our hearts. It was the first song Sam wrote for Newcomers Club, then Geoff and I arranged the accompaniment and we all came together to figure out the harmonies. It tells a story about the trials of growth and young adulthood– lack of a sense of purpose, the end of a defining romance, depression. It plays off the allegory of David and Goliath in the chorus, where we sing about David’s inner conflicts as these sort of ‘giants’ he has to deal with, and finally ends with his self-acceptance. ‘I must be a giant also for these giants all to fit inside of me.’”
