Old Skool Blues on Old Skool Instruments
Singer, songwriter and pianist Sunday Wilde comes from a small town in Ontario, Canada and has learned the trade by many, many times performing in pubs, bars, funeral parlors and anywhere she got a chance. This has not done her any harm, as the trophy cabinet of Ms. Wilde has been properly filled over the years. From 2007 she has released five albums independently, all of which were rated high.
With “Blueberries & Grits” she recently released her sixth album. With ten songs, four of which are originals. The album was recorded in its entirety in Memphis, Tennessee with renowned producer Gary Vincent and she is accompanied by no less renowned musicians such as bassist Reno Jack (who is also her partner), Billy Earhart (Amazing Rhythm Aces), Watermelon Slim, Sturgis Nikides just to name a few. During these recordings exclusively acoustic instruments were used, including a 1857 pump organ.
Her music is put in the box ‘roots’, but that is merely because it is difficult to put a label on it. We hear a mix of blues, country, folk and jazz. Her voice is sultry and sexy, the music is pure and honest. My favorite songs are the creepy “John The Conquer Root”, a cover of Willie Dixon song, and “One Of These Days”, sung with her partner Reno Jack.
This album offers a lot to enjoy. Well played, well produced. And by the use of acoustic instruments it all sounds honest and pure.
