Pharis and Jason Romero Prep New Album ‘Sweet Old Religion’
Pharis and Jason Romero have had a difficult couple of years, having lost their instrument shop to a fire in summer of 2016. Among many other things, the fire claimed all of their tools, building supplies, and musical instruments, including a 1943 Gibson J-45 gifted to the husband and wife pair by Alice Gerrard.
Since then, the Romeros and their tight-knit community of family, friends, and fans have rebuilt. And in the aftermath of rebuilding, the pair began working on songs, many of which began bubbling up in the days and weeks following the fire, that could serve as the follow-up to their 2015 album A Wanderer I’ll Stay.
Announced last week, the duo’s new LP Sweet Old Religion is due out May 18. Notably, the 11-song collection is Pharis and Jason’s first album comprising entirely original material, which Pharis describes as being inspired by, “having our son, dealing with loss and change, and receiving so much love and support… gathered into this big swirl of ideas, feelings, and melodies.”
