Bassist Robert Miller and Project Grand Slam are among the best musical acts working in the United States today and their reputation rests on a number of sterling original pieces as well as imaginative revamps of acknowledged classics. Their latest single “No No No”, culled from the band’s wildly successful release Trippin’, illustrates how adept the band is at rolling their jazz fusion pedigree into a potent mix with their popular music sensibilities. Vocalist Ziarra Washington gives the song its voice and the well polished balance between her performance and the virtuosic elements Miller and his band bring to bear makes “No No No” one of the most effective genre hybrids released in quite some time. It is, however, more of the same for Project Grand Slam as they continue building a reputation as one of the more diverse and musically rich outfits working in American music today.

Tristan Clark lays down some assertive guitar work from the first, but he’s augmented quite effectively by Mario Castro’s moody saxophone and nimble percussion from drummer Joel Mateo and percussionist Guillermo Barron Rios. Mateo and Miller prove to be a fleet footed rhythm section still producing more than enough sonic oomph to stamp their presence on the proceedings ; they, furthermore, provide a solid foundation for the song’s crackling instrumental breaks from Castro’s sax and Clark’s lead guitar.

Every element of this performance is honed to a fine edge. It will be difficult, if not impossible, for a listener to find a single extraneous note in this presentation. Instead, Miller and his band mates are on point throughout and everything they play seems to serve the larger picture of making this a song greater than the sum of its individual parts. The production for this recording maintains an airy and balanced approach, no one performer receiving the lion’s share of aural attention, and they keep things focused in regards to the song’s running time as well, never overstaying their welcome with listeners.

It is a testament to both Miller’s vision for the band and the talents of its individual players that such a robust sound is accurately delineated throughout the course of this recording. Project Grand Slam has more than garnered a stellar reputation in America as the band has branched out into a global market and, with each successive album recording and single release alike, they expand their profile in a meaningful way. This is a band that fills a void and does so with immense stylishness.

It is possible to assemble an outfit of virtuoso talents who share the same sensibility. In the case of Project Grand Slam, that sensibility commands these talented players to serve the song first and they do so without complaint. There are no ego trips with Project Grand Slam’s music, no self-indulgence, and the sheer joy of making first rate music comes through in every second of their latest single. They generate real heat with “No No No” while still providing music fans with a thoroughly entertaining experience
