Music that deeply affects us tends to leave a lasting imprint on our minds as the years go by, to the point where every time we hear a certain song or a particular artist, it can trigger us back to particular time and place in our lives, no matter how much has changed or how long it’s been. Whether it’s the song that was playing on the radio when we met our significant other, or a song that we used to listen to with someone who is no longer a part of our lives, we’re there again, in an instant, as though we never left, and all of the emotionally charged energy that existed in that moment exists again for us, one more time. A lot of times, we associate entire styles with periods in the history of pop culture based on whenever that genre was trending among society. I have found, however, that some of the most articulately accomplished composers and artists have been able to avoid becoming attached with any one set theme or era in their careers. One artist who definitely is creating timeless music for the ages is RW Roldan, a brilliant singer/songwriter with a bit of a bend towards country and a big ear for classic Americana. I’ve never been the biggest fan in the world of country music, but I have never been one to shy away from critically captivating songwriters of any genre, and I can definitely tell you that Roldan is currently near the top of my “artists to watch” list (and for good reason).

Roldan’s new single, “Falling Star” is a fantastic introduction for new fans to his signature smoky sound that is built around richly textured acoustic guitars and reverberating harmonies that leave us aroused with thought. Audiences looking for your typical, run of the mill country music will be sorely disappointed in what they find here; a collectively gorgeous melting pot of folky harmonies, country melody and a swinging beat that doesn’t know how to check itself, let alone want to. It’s a fun track that borders on the more western side of country twang, and that’s pretty refreshing to hear in the 21st century. I wasn’t very familiar with RW Roldan before I first heard “Falling Star,” but I did quite a bit of listening after I discovered this awesome new single. This guy knows his stuff, and he’s already released a couple of full-length LPs with his band Broke Fence that have cemented his credibility within the country and indie communities. If you haven’t already heard of him, I really encourage you to give Roldan’s work a serious listen and try to catch him live and in concert when and if you have the chance to do so. From what I’ve heard, his sets are incredibly intimate and accessible to listeners outside of the normal country music fan base. With such excellent crossover ability and a charismatic personality that you’re bound to fall in love with, RW Roldan is keeping us all satisfied as long as he keeps making songs like “Falling Star.”
