Robert Gordon – Satisfied Mind
Robert Gordon released his first album 27 years ago, and like all of us, hes done a lot of living in the interim. That album, 1977s Robert Gordon With Link Wray, presented him as a raw, upstart talent aimed starward. Satisfied Mind finds him seasoned, confident in his considerable scope, and richer for the life experience.
An interpreter nonpareil, Gordon mines American musics rich lode and strikes treasure. He resurrects hot-rodded rockabilly (Sleepy LaBeefs Aint Gonna Take It No More, Jerry Reeds When I Found You), poignant country (Your Angel Steps Out Of Heaven, Porter Wagoners Satisfied Mind) and spirited rambles (Dear One and Do You Love Me).
His all-star cast equals the choice material, featuring guitarist Eddie Angel and drummer Jimmy Lester from surf-rockers Los Straitjackets. Dwight Yoakam bassist David Roe and onetime Allman Brothers keyboardist Johnny Neel instill live-wire vitality; Fats Kaplin (steel/fiddle) and Dennis Taylor (sax) add color and texture.
For all the bands distinction, though, this is Gordons show. Ferocious rocking, nimble playfulness, melodic balladeering Gordon delivers as only an authentic professional can.
