Those of you who are still hungry after devouring Just Rockin & Rollin, Ronnie Dawsons excellent new album for Upstart, are directed immediately to Crystal Clears new CD issue of his 1989 album for the British label No Hit Records, Rockinitis. While not as stylistically varied as Just Rockin or as powerful track-for-track as 1994s amazing Monkey Beat (also on Crystal Clear by way of No Hit), Rockinitis is nonetheless essential to any fans of the Blond Bomber, as it includes such live staples as Shim Sham Shimmy, Knock Down Drag Out and Yum Yum Yum, which has etched out its place in history as the only rockabilly song to sing the praises of cottage cheese. Yum yum, indeed!
The album is also noteworthy for the Chuck Berry-fueled Real Good Time, the Leiber/Stoller-esque adventure Red Hot Mama, and several gritty blues numbers, such as the previously unreleased bonus track Sloppy Drunk.
In short, Ronnie Dawson at 56 has more energy and vitality than any newly formed pack of 19-year-old punk rockers youd care to mention. This is evident in all his recordings and every live show the cat has ever put on.
