Rust On The Rails – November Sky
Northwest supergroup Rust on the Rails released their debut EP November Sky in October of 2014. This group is comprised of three front men from other bands — frontman Cody Beebe, Blake Noble on vocals and acoustic guitars, and Tim Snider on violin. Scott Mercado, the drummer from Candlebox, gives the group real star power and Eric Miller, the bass player from Cody Beebe & The Crooks, holds it all together.
This is an all-star line-up that blends the styles of world music, progressive rock, ’90s rock, grunge, and classic singer-songwriter in an aggressive acoustic vibe. The six-song EP begins with the furious 12/8 West African-inspired groove of “Far Cry,” with Noble and Mercado quickly sparing for the rhythmic high ground. The mood turns seductive for the slinky “Keep It Easy,” as Beebe explores the blue notes in his voice and Snider provides the lead counterpoint on his lonesome fiddle. The spacious ballad “Atlantis” has touches of Middle Eastern mystique mixed with Southern rock soul, framing the introspective narrative.
The power waltz “Colors” offers advice to a hopeful world through vivid metaphor and Snider delivers a screaming solo. The moody funk song “November Sky” touches on neo-soul and island sounds to deliver a lover’s confession. The group closes the set with “Fall in Line” — a Northwest-styled minor key riff rocker where everyone gets a moment to shine.
This EP from Rust on the Rails demonstrates the depth of skills and powerful dynamic of their collaboration.
