Ry Cooder Spirit Channeling with Hans Theesink and Terry Evans
True and Blue Live
Hans Theesink and Terry Evans
With vocalist Bobby King, Terry Evans provided the ethereal gospel harmonies on Ry Cooder’s ’70s-era recordings and tours, also recording two albums with King: Live and Let Live ’88 and Rhythm, Blues, Soul, and Grooves in 1990. The duo’s latest, True and Blue Live, recorded live in Vienna, is an an extension of Evans’ pairing with Theesink on 2012’s Delta Time, down to the inclusion of that title track on the new one.
Ry Cooder is missing from his one, but his spirit is represented throughout in Theessink’s masterful fingerpicking on J.B Lenoir’s “Talk To Your Daughter,” sliding around Cooderishly on “Bourgeois Blues,” Evans’ vocals add a gospel flavor, taking the evil out of Demons, resurrecting Wilson Pickett’s “Don’t Let the Green Grass Fool You,” throwing a churchy cloak over the secular theme Evans sums up in his introduction, “for the crazy ladies who think the grass is greener on the other side.” Its powerful stuff from a pair of churchy blues masters.
