Sturgill Simpson – Metamodern Sounds in Country Music
In all honesty, why am I doing this review? I mean, Sturgill doesn’t give a rat’s ass about what some obscure music critic thinks of his work. If that’s the case I should just shut this account down and go out and get a job that actually pays. However since the labtop’s on I might as well review this album. There’s only four words I have to say about this album: GO GET IT IMMEADIATLEY! Although, that’s probably not enough information for you is it? I mean, who am I to tell you what to spend your hard earned money on? Anyways, let’s get into this album, shall we?
The thirty five year old Kentucky native, or as he’s better known as the “Savior of Country Music”, realeased the critcally aclaimed album “Metamodern Sounds in Country Music”. When it came out it got a lot of attention, and rightfully so because this album is damn near perfect. Notice I said damn near. There’s always room for improvement. Even Sturgill said so in “Life of Sin” with the line “and the boys and me still working on the sound”
Or hopefully he will if he’s not done with music. I heard awhile back on Trigger’s review of this album that Sturgill was quitting music because he has to “do the right thing” and was thinking about going back West to work on the railroad again. Whatever his decison, let’s hope he makes the right one for his family.
Anyways, let’s get back to the problems with this album. For starters, the electronic elements on this album could get overwhelming at points, especially at the end of one of my favorite tracks “It Ain’t All Flowers”. That being said, Sturgill does balence the electronic elements well on this track. The only of critiuqe I can think of on this album is the cover of “When In Rome”s one hit wonder, The Promise. I hated it but then again I hated the original. Don’t let my issues with this album (however small they may be) get in the way of checking it out. This is gonna a helluva lot more for country music in the long run then anything “Trashville” is gonna put out this year. Please go check this album out, you WILL NOT regret it!
Favorites: All excepted The Promise
I’m gonna give this album nine out of ten
Until next time,
Dylan
