Sunny Sweeney is equal parts Texas badass and southern lady. She tells you like it is and wants you to hear her stories. On her new album, Provoked. Sweeney does just that. Songs that are heartfelt, serious, funny and angry all together that turned into a great final product.
“We started with 40 songs… you’re like eh… but probably already had 4 or 5 ready to go.. We got it down to 20 and I’m like, shit, shit, it’s kinda like cutting off one of your children and figured well, double album (laughs). Got it down to the 13 that you see on the record.”
Calling upon the best songwriters in Nashville in, Brett and Brad Warren, Natalie Hemby and Connie Harrington. Sweeney had the opportunity to branch out and really bring home what she was feeling. But it wasn’t all so serious during the writing sessions.
“Brett and Brad (Warren), are the like brothers I never wanted. They are so inappropriate and funny, my face hurt after our writing sessions. Without a doubt some of the best times I had during this project, those two are special.”
“Carolina On The Line,” which Sweeney co-wrote with the Warren Brothers is a strong, organic song that uses life and the struggles that mold us into one of the best songs on the album.
For “My Bed,” Sweeney thought this song would make a great duet and she knew who to call upon for such a task for a song that told a story of a relationship that pretty much ran out of gas and wasn’t sure where it would go.
“After I wrote ‘My Bed’ I almost immediately thought it would be a duet. Only one person came to mind and it was Will Hoge. Will is such an amazing writer, performer…but his singing about ripped my heart out. So I gave him a call, he listened to the song and said ‘I’d be honoured.” The song really hit a new level with Will singing on it.”
So many amazing and different sonically sounding songs make up a great album in Provoked.
It all wraps up in the ever girl anthem “Everybody Else Can Kiss My Ass.”
Not that Sunny went away, but it’s so good to have this gritty, sassy Texas Woman back with new music, and she should be extremely proud in Provoked.
