In their hometown of Pittsburgh and in pockets elsewhere, the Clarks have built a reputation for playing basic, no-bullshit, good old American rock ‘n’ roll, the kind that doesn’t sound dated even years after it’s created. Several Clarks songs have reached anthem status among the band’s fans, and they’re all represented on Live: “Penny On The Floor”, “Cigarette”, “Caroline”, “Last Call” — each stands as sturdy as an oak. The newer tracks — among them the gorgeous “Over Me” and “Lock And Key” — sound equally strong, a sign of this quartet’s songwriting depth.
Guitarist/mandolinist Rob James’ prowess really stands out here, though bassist Greg Joseph and drummer Dave Minarik hold up their rhythms equally well. Singer Scott Blasey isn’t one of those quietly nuanced, chameleonic vocalists, but he’s got such great range and control, he doesn’t need those devices.
