Americana Boogie new releases for the week of July 8th… The Mastersons, Peter Rowan, David Olney, CSN&Y
Here’s all of the Americana and roots-type music releases for the week of July 8th, 2014 from Americana Boogie.
THE MASTERSONS
Good Luck Charm (New West)
Austin, TX-based husband-wife duo The Mastersons are “poised to be one of Austin’s breakout acts in 2014…” according to the Austin American Statesman. While they are seasoned songwriters and multi-instrumentalists in their own right, they have also become integral members of Steve Earle’s band The Dukes, having been featured on Earle’s The Low Highway and playing hundreds of shows with Earle for the better part of 3 years. During a break between tours, the duo recorded their sophomore album with noted producer Jim Scott (Tom Petty, Wilco, The Dixie Chicks). The new collection raises the stakes with 11 songs that are firmly rooted in sometimes-harsh reality, yet which radiate faith and optimism. All of the songs were co-written by Chris and Eleanor, giving the material added depth as well as a powerful collective lyrical identity that’s matched by their expressive harmonies. (from New West)
DAVID OLNEY
When The Deal Goes Down (Deadbeet)
When the Deal Goes Down presents a dozen tales of roots music mayhem and delight, with the singer/ songwriter backed by a cadre of some of Music City’s most creative players, including long-time Olney compadre Sergio Webb on guitar. Bolstered by his wicked sense of humor, and knack for writing both dramatic and insightful lyrics, the album takes listeners on a wild ride of emotions from love and hope to fear and despair. “I thought it might be helpful to God if I told him (or her) what I wanted from him (or her),” he says about the origin of the album’s title track. “God answered with a lightning bolt that just missed my head. What a kidder!”
PETER ROWAN
Dharma Blues (Omnivore Recordings)
Produced by John Chelew, whose credits include albums by Richard Thompson, The Blind Boys of Alabama, and John Hiatt’s Bring the Family, he was instrumental in the conception of this new and different Peter Rowan recording excursion. Dharma Blues features twelve new Rowan tracks, with guest appearances from Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna) and vocals from Gillian Welch, with instrumentation ranging from banjo and pedal steel to harmonium and water drum.Dave Easley contributed pedal steel and Jody Stetcher played banjo and tamboura. Rowan continues to evolve and create, “The doubts and resolutions of the spiritual journey are what drive Dharma Blues, “says Rowan. “May this music bring joy to all.”
