Australian singer-songwriter Jack Carty asks “What Does Your Heart Say?” (premiere of his new single)

Jack Carty first caught my attention earlier this month when I came across his wonderful tune “She’s Got A Boyfriend.” This self-deprecating uptempo lament about losing a girlfriend to another holds an ingratiating charm that suggests a young, lovelorn Billy Bragg.

Investigating further, I discovered that Carty is an up-and-comer singer-songwriter from Down Under. Since 2009, the impressive twenty-something troubadour has released an EP and a pair of full-length albums. Both of his full-lengths (2011’s One Thousand Origami Birds and 2012’s Break Your Own Heart) populated Australia’s “Album of the Year” lists and last year he nabbed a MusicOz Award for “Singer-Songwriter of the Year.”

Carty already has a new EP, The Predictable Crisis of Modern Life, coming up in Australia this Spring. Its first single “What Does Your Heart Say?” demonstrates his rapid evolution from his early “guy-with-an-acoustic-guitar” sound to a more lush, full-bodied sound. In this song, he utilizes audio samples, strings and other sonic touches, but they get too fussy or distracting from Carty’s ruminations on matters of the heart.
