The Chouse is a former church that has been converted into a private home and for many years a post Woody Guthrie Folk Festival tradition has been Don Conoscenti’s concert in these wonderful surroundings. With people still around after the […]
I've been listening to live music for over forty years and started to write reviews of live shows in 2007.
I write for 'Maverick' magazine in the UK, blog on 'No Depression' and my reviews also appear on the 'Whisperers' page on Bob Harris' (BBC Radio DJ) website.
My interests/likes are predominantly folk, Americana and roots music. Singer/songwriters feature heavily in my album collection.
I've supported a number of musicians via fan funding projects and will continue to do so.
I love receiving feedback on my writing, whether it's agreement or disagreement and I get a real kick when I receive messages telling me that a CD has been purchased or tickets to a gig have been bought on the strength of something I have written.

I’m used to seeing the stage for a Low Anthem show strewn with all manner of instruments but a couple of tins of paint? No, me neither! The indie-folk group, a quintet in its current incarnation, was making a welcome […]
Anaïs Mitchell’s latest album YOUNG MAN IN AMERICA has been receiving great press on both sides of the Atlantic and I’m sure that it will be a shoo-in for many ‘best of year’ lists come December. Meanwhile, she’s touring it, […]
I first started going to live gigs in my early teens. I was underage. I lied about my date of birth so that I could become a member of Friars, a music club based in Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire. Life membership […]
Nearing the end of a UK tour Kevin Welch pitched up at TwickFolk declaring that although he loved England, it had done nothing but ‘rain every God damn day’ since he started his run of dates over here. Dressed casually […]
In 1977 I travelled to the U.S. to stay with a pen friend who lived in Downey, California and little did I know then that Downey was the home of what was to become one of the seminal bands of […]
It’s been six or seven years since Dave Alvin last toured the UK so this was a highly anticipated show by yours truly and it more than lived up to expectations! Alvin’s website says ‘there are two types of folk […]
