There can’t be many musicians whose debut studio album gets nominated for a GRAMMY award. John Fullbright must therefore be a member of a pretty exclusive club because that’s exactly what has happened to FROM THE GROUND UP. This soon […]
I've been listening to live music for over forty years and started to write reviews of live shows in 2007.
I write for 'Maverick' magazine in the UK, blog on 'No Depression' and my reviews also appear on the 'Whisperers' page on Bob Harris' (BBC Radio DJ) website.
My interests/likes are predominantly folk, Americana and roots music. Singer/songwriters feature heavily in my album collection.
I've supported a number of musicians via fan funding projects and will continue to do so.
I love receiving feedback on my writing, whether it's agreement or disagreement and I get a real kick when I receive messages telling me that a CD has been purchased or tickets to a gig have been bought on the strength of something I have written.

Award winning music producer Ethan Johns (Ryan Adams, Laura Marling, Ray LaMontagne, Kings of Leon, Tom Jones etc. etc.) is more used to working behind the scenes, making others sound good, rather than having attention focused on himself. All that […]
Manitoba native, Alana Levandoski, spent five months of 2011 on a music pilgrimage. She drove away from heartache, loss and financial ruin without any particular agenda except to immerse herself in the music of the communities living along her route […]
Listen. Experience. Engage. That’s the motto of this venue and four sold-out Ellis Paul shows over two nights (30th and 31st December) showed that that’s exactly what many music lovers wanted to do. Paul has been playing this venue annually […]
Earlier this year I watched the film documentary SEARCHING FOR SUGARMAN. It told the story of how two South African fans tracked down Detroit based singer/songwriter Sixto Rodriguez, a cult hero in their country, decades after he had released a […]
Walking into the Hall the first thing I noticed was that the ‘stage’ for tonight’s show was on the floor, and the ‘proper stage’ was all curtained off as if it was out of bounds. All became clearer later as […]
Producer extraordinaire Ethan Johns (Kings of Leon, Laura Marling, Rufus Wainwright, Ryan Adams, Tom Jones etc. etc.) is undertaking a tour of eighteen record stores throughout the UK in anticipation of the release of his solo album IF NOT NOW, […]
Dateline: October 31st 2012. 4.45am alarm call. Car to London, Gatwick airport. Plane to Amsterdam. Train to Nijmegen. Bus to Ottersum. Jimmy LaFave and Band – Roepean Podium, Ottersum. I often wonder if musicians really appreciate the friendships they foster […]
‘In The Woods’ is a music venue, run on a not for profit basis by music lovers who attract a discernible audience. Almost as soon as the tickets for Jimmy LaFave’s show went on sale they sold out and I […]
And so to the final date of the UK tour where the show signage indicated another sell out. We Brits have taken Sam Baker to our hearts since Bob Harris first played him on BBC Radio 2 back in April […]
