With both Chicago and Texas in her bones — and music in her blood — Daphne Willis was destined to become a singer-songwriter. You can’t fight both nature and nurture, after all. Willis actually tried, though, but the call was […]
Having won prestigious literary competitions in both grade school and junior high, Kelly McCartney attended college with a Scripps Howard Foundation scholarship, earned a BA in Journalism, and interned at Entertainment Tonight. She then started her career in 1989 as a personal assistant to celebrity types like Susanna Hoffs (Bangles) and Adam Horowitz (Beastie Boys). Over the past 25 years (and counting), Kelly has tackled almost every role in the music business -- except artist -- working with folks like Vonda Shepard, Shawn Mullins, Jill Sobule, Melissa Ferrick, Boingo, JD Souther, Steven Delopoulos, Tracy Bonham, Natalia Zukerman, and more.
At some point in there, Kelly got back to her roots, combined her loves of music and writing, and became a freelance "expert" for AllMusic.com penning album reviews and artist bios for Sheryl Crow, Dixie Chicks, Sarah McLachlan, Indigo Girls, Shawn Colvin, David Gray, and many more. Shortly after, she joined the Velvetpark magazine upstarts and authored interviews with the likes of Joan Osborne, Patty Griffin, and others.
Kelly currently contributes to No Depression, Cuepoint, Folk Alley, PopMatters, Curve, NoiseTrade, NPR Music, and the Bluegrass Situation, interviewing and reviewing artists including Annie Lennox, Lenny Kravitz, Ani DiFranco, Brandy Clark, OK Go, and many more. On the side, she is still consulting with artists, while also collaborating with some wonderful musicians on a multi-media theatre series and developing a couple of music-related video projects.

Music festivals aren’t my thing. The thought of spending multiple days — even ONE day — in a massive, sweaty crowd of drunk people is one of my top five worst nightmares. I don’t care how great the line-up is. […]
Having thoroughly enjoyed the Indigo Girls‘ performances numerous times over the past 25 years–in various settings and configurations–seeing them play on May 23 with the Nashville Symphony was an utter revelation. The splendor of Schermerhorn Hall, the elegance of the Nashville Symphony, and […]
There are a few artists who create such distinct, consistent works that an avid listener sometimes downright craves some time well spent wrapped in their songs. Peter Bradley Adams is one of those artists. Though his style never strays from […]
Indigo Girls Emily Saliers and Amy Ray have always worked—and lived—at the intersection of art and activism, supporting myriad great causes and organizations. On May 15, they’ll be in Nashville to play a benefit for Thistle Farms at Thistle Stop […]
After 35 years of performing, Amy Ray should exhibit some small measure of cynicism, some slight indication that this whole thing is getting old. Nope. Not a chance. Quite the opposite, actually. Her genuine enthusiasm for music and its makers […]
On her new record, Love and Hate, singer-songwriter Joan Osborne delves deeply into matters of the heart. It’s a lovely, sensual work that reflects her as a woman and an artist. For the bulk of the set, Osborne partnered with long-time […]
Once upon a time, Katie Herzig wore her heart on her sleeve and wielded an acoustic guitar, both apropos of being a singer/songwriter. These days, though, she keeps company with synthesizers and drum loops. Yeah, the heart is still right there […]
There are some artists who continually push and pull themselves into new artistic terrain with each release. And there are some artists who stay within their creative comfort zone and try to make it the best it can be with […]
This article was originally published by American Songwriter. Amy Ray is a rebel. The South is her heritage and rule-breaking is her birthright. As the darker half of Indigo Girls (with Emily Saliers), Ray has always infused her songs with […]
