I first encountered Robert Cray in the mid 1980’s when a friend bought tickets to see him play at Newcastle City Hall and insisted that I go too. I’d never heard of him at the time, but went along out […]
January 2015
To whom it may concern;
In 2002 I had my first ever review printed in the UK's premier Americana/Country /Roots magazine Maverick; then in 2009 I submitted my first review to the fledgling No Depression website.
Subsequently I have had photographs and written work featured on several other UK based Americana and Blues websites that have come and gone over the years, three Regional newspapers (Sunday Sun, Evening Chronicle and Northern Echo) plus I have also had several photos in the Guardian and Daily Telegraph national newspapers. From Day #1 my reviews were consistently 'featured' on the No Depression homepage; so I presume I must have done something right.
Writing reviews has always a 'vanity project'; bringing my writing and photography to a large worldwide audience; but times and publishers change so I began my own website/blog The Rocking Magpie https://rockingmagpie.wordpress.com/ in December 2015.

A diamond of a genre straddling record Reviewing albums is akin to buying three bottles of wine for £10 in a supermarket. Without fail the wine will be palatable. Occasionally you will open a bottle with a non-descript label and, […]
JD McPherson at Caedmon Hall Gateshead
English Folk Legend enjoys himself It’s all too easy to say you like Richard Thompson’s music, but in my opinion it’s impossible to like everything he has recorded. Personally, I never liked Fairport Convention; but loved quite a bit of […]
Saturday 27th January 2013 The Jumping Hot Club has done it again; not only have they unearthed an amazing young Rock and Roller called JD McPherson; but the Caedmon Hall in Gateshead is an outstanding venue with absolutely wonderful acoustics. […]
24th January 2013 This was the third time I’ve seen the Honey Bop Trio and you’d never know that this is just a fun sideline for the three musicians who are all much in demand in recording studios across the […]

Possibly the most important record of the year This is Manchester based Singer-songwriter Matt Hill’s third album and the previous pair were both critical successes; getting him to support acts as diverse as Lambchop, Neko Case and Richmond Fontaine. The […]
