January 2015
To whom it may concern;
In 2002 I had my first ever review printed in the UK's premier Americana/Country /Roots magazine Maverick; then in 2009 I submitted my first review to the fledgling No Depression website.
Subsequently I have had photographs and written work featured on several other UK based Americana and Blues websites that have come and gone over the years, three Regional newspapers (Sunday Sun, Evening Chronicle and Northern Echo) plus I have also had several photos in the Guardian and Daily Telegraph national newspapers. From Day #1 my reviews were consistently 'featured' on the No Depression homepage; so I presume I must have done something right.
Writing reviews has always a 'vanity project'; bringing my writing and photography to a large worldwide audience; but times and publishers change so I began my own website/blog The Rocking Magpie https://rockingmagpie.wordpress.com/ in December 2015.

Dark and occasionally Gothic Folk songs with a Celtic rawness I really enjoyed Amelia Curran’s previous (Award-winning, no less) album HUNTER HUNTER so was thrilled to receive SPECTATORS just before Christmas. The first thing that struck me this time was the […]
One family’s record collection condensed into one album…and it works. David Bronson has been in and around the NY music scene for quite a while now, but has only recently recorded his own work. STORY is the first of two […]

Quality Folk enriched Americana from the British heartlands I receive a quite a few albums each month and there’s no scientific approach to what order I listen to them. Even household names can get passed over if I’m feeling in […]
You may or may not know this but as well as trying to make a living wage I not only write about music for several magazines and UK newspapers but I also host a weekly radio show. OK I’m not […]
Irish Folk Singer returns after 15 years and sounds like she’s never been away Although she enjoyed some success when a member of legendary Irish Folk group Deanta in the 1990’s Cara Dillon’s sister Mary chose to leave the music […]
Progressive Bluegrass anyone? The title track which opens the album kicks it into life with a 30 second ‘duelling banjos’ type intro; but these banjos appear to have a Punk-Folk tuning. When Paul Givant’s fulsome voice comes in, the whole atmosphere […]
Sometimes the Blues can be fun too. I first came across Big Boy Bloater early in 2012 when I saw an out of date poster promoting a gig of his and was intrigued by the name and some of the […]
Tender and Melodic Alt-Country from ex-Indie Rockers I wish more artists would realise that a snappy intro to track one often decides the mood of the listener; especially if they are new to their work. ANDERS & KENDALL do just […]
