Billy Preston: 1946 to 2006
BILLY PRESTON, long remembered as the Fifth Beatle, died June 5 in Scottsdale, Arizona. He had been in a coma caused by pericarditis since late in 2005. The keyboardist and singer had two significant hits in the ’70s (“Will It Go Round In Circles” and “Nothing From Nothing”) but was principally a sideman who worked, from age 10 on, with everyone from Mahalia Jackson to Ray Charles to Bob Dylan. He was 59.
