To paraphrase Bob Dylan, goodbye’s too strong a word, so for now I’ll just say “fare thee well.” As the world turns, I’ve come to the end of my tenure in this role of Web Editor at No Depression. Nothing feels certain these days, but at least I’ll still be around on the site as a writer and a lover of roots music, of that I am sure.
The music industry can be a terrible place. But to paraphrase another great artist’s sentiment — from No Depression’s March 2025 Spotlight artist Olivia Ellen Lloyd’s beautiful essay this week — it’s the communities we make for ourselves that sustain us. No Depression is one of those communities; its writers, readers, and artists make it a rare and wonderful publication.
Music sustains us. I moved into a new apartment a few months ago, and soon discovered that the church that shares my courtyard rings its bells twice a day — live, from what I can tell. I make a point to stop what I’m doing and just listen and soak in the simple beauty of notes strung together. I feel the need for music and the joy it brings intensely these days.
Remember to laugh; music heals; it’s okay to heal yourself, too. And fare thee well. May our paths cross soon!
